Mexico Middle School continues to work to prepare its students for future successes. Project Lead the Way (PLTW) courses, a STEM-based curriculum, is now being offered as an elective course opportunity for all middle school students. STEM-based learning focuses on the understandings of concepts in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.

MMS currently offers two PLTW courses for 6th-8th grade students. All students in grade 7 participate in PLTW App Creators, using the MIT App Inventor program, as part of their computer education requirement. Through this course, students learn basic designing and coding skills necessary to create a mobile app to solve real-world problems. Some student learning experiences are completing coding tasks to design and create a mobile app that assists disaster relief workers in coordinating resources when assisting in foreign countries. Another learning task is to create an educational game app that helps students learn parts of the body, functions, and locations.

Another PLTW course offered at Mexico Middle School is Design and Modeling. Through this elective course, students discover the design process and different technology-based designing tools. The students work through the design process to create, build, and present orthopedic shoes and various toys that would prove beneficial to a child with cerebral palsy.

By enrolling in Project Lead the Way courses, the participating students have opportunities to create while experiencing real-world learning. By incorporating the PLTW Gateway curriculum at Mexico Middle School, Mexico Public Schools now has the STEM-based PLTW curriculum offered to all students grades K-12.

Project Lead the Way Gateway provides opportunities for students to engage in authentic learning activities that build knowledge and skills in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). PLTW also empowers students to develop essential skills needed for problem solving during project development, critical and creative thinking while designing and developing projects, communicating their learning to others, working with others through collaboration, and perseverance while completing tasks. Mexico Middle School continuously works to provide learning opportunities to help all students succeed and prepare them for future successes.
