District conducted Mock Cardiac Drills, strengthening emergency readiness

November 24, 2025 – A student collapses during recess. A staff member experiences sudden chest pain during a class transition. These moments are rare, but when they happen, every second matters. That’s why our district recently completed Mock Cardiac Response Drills at our three elementary schools.
These drills were part of Phase 2 of the state AED Grant Program, which helps schools ensure they have the right equipment, trained staff, and response procedures in place for cardiac emergencies. The staff practiced real-time communication and AED retrieval. Coordinated response with local emergency partners also allows the district to strengthen its ability to respond quickly and confidently.
The district evaluated its current equipment and submitted draft Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERP) for each building. Existing AEDs at the three Title I elementary schools will be relocated to Mexico High School and Mexico Middle School, expanding coverage in high-traffic areas. The elementary buildings will receive brand-new AED units once the state finalizes distribution numbers, ensuring that every location in each building is reachable within three minutes.
The drills confirmed that appropriate staff members, nurses, School Resource Officers, and equipment are in place. Additional CPR certification and response training will continue so team members stay prepared and current.
Mock drills for the high school and middle school will take place later this year as part of the district’s full-system readiness plan.
These training events were completed in partnership with Audrain Ambulance District, local dispatch, and law enforcement. Their involvement provided realistic timing, communication practice, and an opportunity for all partners to collaborate on what works best in a true emergency.
The drills are organized by Kronesha Belcher, Director of Health Services. Mexico Public Schools remains committed to meeting state and federal safety guidelines while engaging staff and community partners to keep students safe. These drills help ensure that if a cardiac emergency occurs, our teams are ready.
