General Public Notices

  • On March 27, 2020, President Trump signed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES) Act into law. The CARES Act is a $2 trillion relief package to address the economic fallout related to the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Mexico Public Schools Notice in regards to the CARES Act

  • The Mexico School District receives funds under the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and is required to follow federal statutes and regulations regarding the programs governed by the ESEA. If any individual or organization (person) has a complaint or is concerned that the district may be violating these laws, the Board wants the superintendent or designee to immediately investigate and address the issue. For that reason, the Board has adopted this policy to address specific allegations of violations of federal statutes and regulations governing Title I, Parts A, B, C, D; Title II; Title III; Title IV, Part A; or Title V of the ESEA.

Board Policy KLA: Concerns and Complaints Regarding Federal Programs

  •

The guide explains how to file a complaint about any of the programs that are administered by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (the Department) under the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).

Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA) Complaint Procedures

  • Federal Law (Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015) requires schools that receive Title 1 funds to notify parents or legal guardians in writing when their child has been taught for four consecutive weeks by a teacher or substitute who does not meet applicable State Certification or licensure requirements at the grade level and subject area in which the teacher has been assigned.

Presently, your child may be taught by a teacher who is not appropriately state-certified. This includes teachers holding a State Emergency Certification, taking the required credits towards his/her permanent certificate to make them "Appropriately State Certified" as required by the Every Student Succeeds Act.

Upon your request, our district is required to provide you in a timely manner, the following information:

    • Whether your student's teacher has met State qualifications and licensing criteria for the grade levels and subjects in which the teacher provides instruction.
    • Whether your student's teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which State qualifications or licensing criteria have been waived.
    • Whether your student's teacher is teaching in the field of discipline of the certification of the teacher.

In addition to the information that parents may request, a building receiving Title 1A funds must provide information on the level of achievement and academic growth, if applicable and available, on each of the State academic assessments required under Title 1A.

It is important to note that the district requires teachers to actively pursue certification requirements.

Thank you for your continued support.

  • Mexico Public Schools recognizes that students in foster care face unusual educational challenges. The district has a policy and procedure regarding students in foster care. A clickable link to the district's policy and procedure for foster care students are below.

The purpose of the policy is to provide foster care students with educational stability and remove barriers to, and provide opportunities for, academic excellence for foster care students. In order to achieve this purpose, the district will work collaboratively with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the Children's Division (CD) of the Missouri Department of Social Services.

Get the Lead Out

In 2022, the Missouri legislature passed the Get the Lead out of School Drinking Water Act (RSMo 160.077), which sets standards for lead concentrations in school drinking water. The law requires schools to conduct inventory, sampling, remediation, and monitoring at all potable drinking water outlets used or potentially be used for drinking, food preparation, and cooking or cleaning utensils. The deadline under the law is August of 2024, and testing at Mexico School District began in late fall of 2023.

Under the law, results are communicated directly with families within seven days (via the email they have on file). Results are also required to be posted on the district website and reported to the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS). DHSS is currently developing reporting methods and procedures.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently has a lead drinking water standard limit of 15 micrograms per liter (ug/L) of lead in water. However, Missouri law requires that all  Missouri schools achieve a 5 ug/L limit of lead in water.

Results will be posted on this page once they are available. Please contact Dr. Allen Miles, Assistant Superintendent, at 573-581-3773 or by email at rmiles@mexico.k12.mo.us with any questions about this information.

MCMILLAN EARLY LEARNING CENTER LEAD TESTING

Lead tests were recently conducted at McMillan Early Learning Center (MELC) in 73 locations, including the hallway and classroom drinking fountains, bathroom sinks, and kitchen faucets. Results revealed a majority of outlets showed a trace of lead less than 1.0 ppb. Two of those locations exceeded the 5 ppb limit and were immediately rectified. The two locations had levels of 17 ppb and 6.8 ppb.

--Room 93: One of the tests was completed on a faucet that showed a reading of 6.8 ppb. Within 24 hours, this was remediated with a new faucet.

--Room 120: Two draws were taken simultaneously from the sink in this classroom. The first draw read 17 ppb, and the second was <1.0 ppb. Within 24 hours, this was remediated with a new faucet.
