MPS substitute teachers receive training to strengthen classroom support

January 6, 2026 – The Mexico School District hosted a substitute teacher training today, welcoming 17 current substitute teachers for a hands-on session focused on what it takes to support students during a typical school day.
The goal is to make sure substitutes walk into any classroom in our district and feel like part of the team. By listening to feedback from substitutes and teachers, the district can keep practices consistent and make each day smoother for students.
The training was led by district instructional coaches Lara Brunk, Carey Knipfel, and Wendy Lentz, who designed the morning to give substitutes the tools they need to feel confident, prepared, and supported in every building.
Participants received practical guidance on required online trainings, time sheets, and district procedures. The session also covered everyday classroom routines, including building check-in processes, lesson preparation, accommodations, attendance expectations, hallway and duty responsibilities, dismissal routines, and how to navigate classroom technology.
The final portion of the training focused on real-world classroom management scenarios, with discussion on active supervision, maintaining confidentiality, and behavior supports.
With districts across Missouri and the nation facing a shortage of substitute teachers, trainings like this one are critical, not only for supporting current staff, but also for encouraging others in the community to consider the role.
Substitute teachers play a key part in keeping classrooms running smoothly when regular staff members are absent, ensuring students continue learning in a safe and supportive environment.
