"Your Future is Bright" Event Guides 8th Graders Toward Success

February 7, 2025 - Eighth graders and their parents took an important step toward future success at the recent "Your Future is Bright" event. Hosted by Mexico Middle School and Bright Futures, the event aimed to start conversations between students and parents about life beyond high school and the skills needed for success in the workforce.
With support from Mrs. Kelsey Kirchhoff, Ms. Suzanne Evans, and Mrs. Amiee Blackburn, students participated in career-focused sessions and heard from a panel of local professionals, including Norman Steelman, Michelle Stephens, Jeremy Evans, Jheron Nunnelly, and Regina Johnson. Panelists shared insights on financial literacy, workforce readiness, and job interview skills, while engaging in a Q&A session with students and parents.
A highlight of the evening was the mock job interview session, where parents practiced interviewing their students. “I love seeing parents give their students feedback on introducing themselves, answering questions, and body language,” shared Kelsey Kirchoff, event organizer. “It's a fun way to teach a skill and connect at the same time.”
Participants also enjoyed a meal from Mr. Murphy’s Stuffed Spud and a financial literacy presentation by Mary Rhorbach from CMCA (Central Missouri Community Action). Other key organizations involved included C2C and local businesses that provided valuable career advice.
The event’s primary goal was to encourage conversations between students and parents about career readiness, particularly as 8th graders prepare to transition to high school. “This is the time of year we start talking about high school and beyond, and we want to help families start thinking about setting themselves up for success.” Mrs. Kirchoff continued, “I believe we accomplished that goal, and my favorite part each year is seeing these conversations happen.”
The career readiness discussions didn’t stop at this event. The following week, students toured Hart Career Center to explore high school programs, and parents attended Freshman Focus Night to learn more about enrollment. Additionally, high school counselors will visit the middle school in late February to guide students through selecting their freshman-year classes.
A special thanks to the Garf Thomas Family Trust for its generous support in making this event possible, and to everyone who contributed to preparing our students for a bright future!
