A Slam Dunk for Literacy: Packed literacy night connects school to home

February 11, 2025 – Families gathered at Mexico High School for an exciting Literacy Night, a special event designed to encourage a love for reading and provide families with tools to support literacy at home.
Siven, a Hawthorne student, was excited to invite his mom Stephanie to the event. “I really wanted to see basketball - and I got a free book!”
Elementary students participated in a variety of hands-on literacy activities, including a bookmark-making station and interactive learning stations. Each student also received a free book as a special gift for attending, helping to promote reading at home.
“Our goal was to bring families together and make literacy engaging for our students,” shared Danielle Louder, Title teacher. Co-teacher Alex Stuckenschnieder added, “Seeing parents, teachers, and students enjoying the activities and taking home books made the event a huge success.”
The district hosts two literacy nights each year. The first was held at the individual elementary buildings. The success of this second event was attributed to partnering with Mexico High School, because, as an added bonus, families were given free admission to that evening’s basketball games, making it a night full of learning and fun.
“Hosting at MHS came with an added bonus - I was able to see some of my former students!” shared Title teacher Peggy Klick.
In addition to the literacy-focused activities, the Hawthorne PTO partnered with the school for a fundraiser during the event, further supporting students and school programs.
The district Title reading teachers organized the event: Peggy Klick, Danielle Louder, Bryan Green, Alex Stuckenschnieder, Cheyenne Parks. Elementary principals, teachers, and volunteers were also present to meet and greet families.
