Winter Olympics take over Hawthorne PE class

February 17, 2026 – The Winter Olympics aren’t just happening in Italy! We’ve got a challenging course set up in Hawthorne PE!
PE teacher Mrs. Costley has transformed her elementary classes into a Winter Olympics unit, complete with interactive stations that mirror real Olympic events. Students rotate through snowboarding, ice skating, skeleton luge, curling, ski jumping, speed skating, and a snowball frenzy activity.
The energy in the gym has been high, with students cheering one another on and eagerly moving from station to station.
While building balance, agility, coordination, and teamwork, students are also learning about the history and global significance of the Olympic Games. The connection to current international competition gives the lessons added relevance, helping students see how classroom learning ties to real-world events.
Mrs. Costley’s creative approach reflects her commitment to engaging students in meaningful ways. Rather than teaching isolated skills, she designed an experience that combines movement, history, geography, and current events into one cohesive lesson.
