Finding friends on the playground, MELC receives grant to support students

April 8, 2026 - Mexico Public Schools has received a grant from Consolidated Electric Cooperative through its Consolidated Cares program to support inclusive communication at McMillan Early Learning Center.
A communication board helps individuals express themselves using pictures, symbols, and words. On the playground, the board creates opportunities for students to engage more fully in play and social interaction, especially those who are nonverbal, minimally verbal, or learning English.
With the addition of the board on the preschool playground, students will be able to communicate basic needs, ask to join games, take turns, and share in everyday moments with their peers. These interactions help build confidence, strengthen social skills, and create a greater sense of belonging.
The project, written by Special Services Director Melissa Deimeke, will bring the bilingual, double-sided communication board to the preschool playground at McMillan. Representatives from Consolidated Electric visited campus to present the grant and take part in a photo with Deimeke and MELC Principal, Dr. Anne Billington, celebrating the impact this project will have on students, which extends beyond students with communication challenges.
The board also introduces all students to different ways of communicating, encouraging empathy, patience, and understanding. Teachers and staff can use it as a tool to model inclusive behavior and support meaningful peer connections.
Including both English and Spanish reflects the growing diversity of the Mexico community and ensures more students and families feel represented and supported.
This project highlights the district’s commitment to inclusive education and equitable access for all learners. The communication boards will be durable, weather-resistant, and installed at child-friendly heights to ensure accessibility across both playgrounds.
