Janet Graham named 2026 Distinguished Alumnus

May 23, 2026 – Janet Graham, a proud member of Mexico High School’s Class of 1979, has spent nearly five decades inspiring young people, enriching the arts, and investing in the community she has always called home. At the recent graduation ceremony, she was honored as the Class of 2026 Distinguished Alumnus.
During her years at Mexico High School, Janet found her passion for the performing arts through school musicals and choreography for choir performances. After graduation, Janet continued her education at Moberly Area Community College and Southwest Missouri State University while earning professional accreditations and certifications through multiple dance organizations, including Dance Masters of America.
In 1980, Janet returned home to Mexico and opened a small dance studio in downtown Mexico. She later built the current facility on West Liberty Street, expanding opportunities for local children to explore dance, creativity, and confidence through the arts. In 2004, the studio expanded once again, and this year marks 46 years of business in Mexico.
Throughout her career, Janet’s mission has remained clear: to instill in young people a love for dance and the performing arts. She says some of her proudest moments have come not from trophies or titles, but from watching students grow, mature, and accomplish goals they once thought impossible.
Janet’s impact extends beyond the studio. She has been involved with organizations including the Mexico Jaycees, the Miss Audrain and Miss Missouri pageant programs, and volunteers at St. Brendan School. Through her mentorship, service, and encouragement, she has helped countless young people discover confidence, leadership, and purpose.
Janet’s roots in Mexico run deep. Her parents made Mexico home following World War II, where her father started a small business. Janet and her two brothers all graduated from Mexico High School, continuing a family legacy in Bulldog country. Janet and her husband, Tracy, later raised two sons—both graduates of MHS.
Janet shared that she considers it both “an honor and a privilege” to be named the Class of 2026 Distinguished Alumna. Her advice to today’s graduates is simple but powerful: “Listen….. really listen what is being asked of you and then give 150%, You are the only one that can make your life a success. Life isn’t about making a paycheck but making a difference in the lives of the ones around you. People will not remember the words you said but the way you made them feel. Treat everyone with love and respect.”
For her lifelong dedication to the arts, her commitment to mentoring young people, and her enduring investment in the Mexico community, the Bulldog Class of 2026 proudly celebrates Janet Graham as this year’s Distinguished Alumna.
