September 20, 2026 - Kerri Smith was recognized for her work supporting students, families, and educators across the district. She was named the Exceptional Process Coordinator from the Missouri Council of Administrators of Special Education (MO-CASE),  honored during the MO-CASE annual state conference this evening.

The Exceptional Process Coordinator Award recognizes a Missouri special educator who shows outstanding leadership and makes a meaningful difference for students with disabilities. The award highlights work with students and teachers as well as strong partnerships with families, administrators, and community agencies.

Smith has served as a process coordinator for Mexico Public Schools for the past nine years. In her role, she helps make sure students with disabilities receive the instruction, services, and support they need to be successful.

A large part of Smith’s work is bringing people together. She works closely with special education and general education teachers, administrators, parents, and outside organizations to identify student needs and coordinate support.

She also serves as an important resource for families. Special education requirements can sometimes feel complicated, and Smith works to explain the process in clear terms, listen to families’ concerns, and make sure parents have a voice in decisions about their child’s education. Her ability to build trust and strong relationships was highlighted throughout her award nomination.

Her work goes beyond academics. Smith helps teams create plans that encourage students to build independence, communication skills, self-advocacy, and other skills they will need after leaving school.

Smith is also committed to supporting her fellow educators. She regularly attends state conferences and professional learning opportunities to stay current on effective practices and then brings that knowledge back to Mexico Public Schools. She provides guidance and training to staff members as they work to meet the individual needs of students.
