More Ways to Connect: New Playground Communication Board Supports Preschoolers

September 31, 2026 – Mexico Public Schools has received a grant from the local Edmuston Foundation to support inclusive communication at McMillan Early Learning Center.
A communication board has been installed on the preschool playground. Students will be able to communicate basic needs, ask to join games, take turns, and share in everyday moments with their peers.
These interactions help build confidence, strengthen social skills, and create a greater sense of belonging. The board also introduces all students to different ways of communicating, encouraging empathy, patience, and understanding. Teachers and staff can use it as a tool to model inclusive behavior and support meaningful peer connections.
Including both English and Spanish reflects the growing diversity of the Mexico community and ensures more students and families feel represented and supported.
This project highlights the district’s commitment to inclusive education and equitable access for all learners. The communication boards will be durable, weather-resistant, and installed at child-friendly heights to ensure accessibility across both playgrounds. The grant was written by Special Services Director Melissa Deimeke.
