Career in Focus: Health Sciences

The Health Sciences program at Hart Career Center is a one year course that prepares students for the health care field. The program is designed to teach skills in resident care which will qualify students to perform basic nursing procedures and to assist licensed practical nurses or registered professional nurses in direct resident care. Mrs. Donna Butts has been proudly teaching the Health Science program at Hart Career Center for 36 years. Students can participate in On-the-Job Training and many work in the Mexico Veterans Home or King's Daughters Nursing Home. Students will learn the fundamentals of health care to prepare them for the workforce whether they decide to go on to a long-term health care facility, a doctor’s office, hospital, or if they plan on going to a 2 or 4 year institution.
Jewel Knipe, a Senior at Fulton High School works with elderly patients doing resident work. She says, “You can earn your Certified Nursing Assistant or CNA license through this class and can get hands-on experience that will benefit you as you continue in the medical field.” The course requires 100 hours of supervised on the job training, most will be outside the classroom and school day. A few juniors in the program including Taylor Brown, Nevaeh Johnson and Megan McCurdy, plan to use their CNA to work throughout the rest of their high school years. Megan McCurdy says the CNA helps her to learn how to communicate with future patients to help her throughout college and her career. Many of the graduating seniors in this program are working their way through college, it’s only because of this program that many of these students get these benefits of working good jobs in healthcare to help pay their way through college. So, if you’re looking for a health program that will prepare you for the workforce and beyond, then the Health Sciences program at Hart Career Center is the perfect program for you!
