In 1968, Davis H. Hart envisioned a school devoted to vocational and technical education for high school students within the surrounding area. Each year beginning in 1977, in honor of Mr. Hart's vision, senior students who excel in their career and technical goals are nominated by their instructors for the Davis H. Hart Award. Students who meet the criteria can be nominated by their instructor. These nominees submit their resumes and develop a presentation which is presented before a panel of judges who make the decision.

HCC Student Spotlight: Addison David, Mexico High School Junior, Teaching Professions

Addison David is working at the school.

Nominated by Mrs. Eva Eikel, Teaching Professions Instructor

Addison is one of the hardest working students I have had the pleasure to work with. She gives her all at everything she does! I know she is going to make an excellent teacher some day! Addison plans to work for Mexico Schools as an Elementary Special Education Paraprofessional while continuing to pursue her Associate of Arts Teaching degree through MACC online. She has worked as a Cadet Teacher through the A+ program in the Mrs. Medina’s 5th grade classroom in addition to spending this semester in the Special Education classroom at Eugene Field with Ms. Coleman. Addison says: “Spending the semester with the students in Ms. Coleman’s class has shown me that I enjoy working with students that need extra love and support.”

Career in Focus: Pre-Engineering, Project Lead The Way

Cade Foreman, Aurora Bingham and Brixton Georne work on a project in PLTW class.
The Engineering Program at Hart Career Center prepares students for future careers as Engineers. Completing the program of engineering courses can offer students opportunities to many universities and engineering programs post High School. Many of the students in Mr. Long’s classes plan to look into college options at Mizzou and Missouri S&T so HCC takes all the PLTW students on campus visits each fall. In class, students may also choose to become certified users of a 3D drafting program, Autodesk Inventor, after completing Engineering Essentials. In this program students will learn how to code and students will design different inventions. The class is very hands-on and can build social skills; you’re constantly working together to code or design something new. Brixton Goerne, a Senior at Mexico High School says, “You are assigned different projects to create different things and you constantly are learning something new each class period.” Students will use different machines like the CNC machine to shave metals and perfect their project and craft. Jiles Williams, a Junior at Mexico High School says, “You will learn different skills, skills like problem solving, teamwork, and creativity.” This program can build the groundwork for your future career and provide you with skills that will help you throughout your life.
Garrett Hopke and Everett Curtis work on a project.
Aurora Bingham, a Sophomore at Mexico High School says, “This program helps to pave the groundwork for the workforce if you plan on going into the engineering field and it absolutely will help you earn scholarships.” Garrett Hopke, a Junior from Van-Far High School says, “I was drawn to this program because the Pre-Engineering courses at HCC have more funding and better resources than the regular class choices.” Everett Curtis, Junior from CR6 says “The work assigned in these classes are challenging, but also fun. It is fun to do hands on learning with the VEX building kit.” So, if you feel drawn to this program, don’t hesitate to put it on your schedule for next year! It will give you skills and friendships that will last a lifetime!
