Career in Focus: Collaboration Across Curriculum with Advanced Marketing and Graphic Design

News From The Hart Contributors: Graphic Designers Sara Dorr and Sydney Wyman, along with Advanced Marketing writer Skylar Shaw.

News From The Hart Contributors: graphic designers Sara Dorr and Sydney Wyman along with marketing writer Skylar Shaw.

My name is Skylar Shaw and I am a Senior at Mexico High School. I have been the writer of News From The Hart newsletter this year. I was honored when asked to be a collaborator in this project, I had never been a part of anything like this before. I was a bit nervous, but knew that my marketing skills would certainly help with this opportunity. I enjoyed writing every paragraph I wrote and was always excited for my next one. It was like opportunity after opportunity for me. Writing this newsletter has caused me to learn more and more about the Hart Career Center and even my own abilities. Each student interviewed, even those who were a bit nervous, helped me out tremendously in writing the newsletter. They gave me useful information that made each paragraph come alive and flow well. My first program I did was the Graphic Design Program, where I learned the elements and principles of design and how to deal with clients more effectively and efficiently. Next, I did my very own Marketing Program. I learned how to better improve a product/service to meet the customers’ wants and needs. Then I featured the welding program at Hart Career Center. I got to interview several welding students and they taught me that welding requires hands-on experience and a strong work ethic. Next, I did the Auto Mechanics Program at Hart Career Center, there I learned the importance of common maintenance and teamwork. Then, I did the Teaching Professions Program at Hart Career Center, where I learned that teachers need experience and that is the benefit of this program; they are training to be teachers and gaining experience for when they enter the teaching field. I then wrote for the Construction and Diesel Mechanics programs, where I learned that these are both respectable workforce career paths that help to develop skills like teamwork, problem solving, and hands-on experience that will benefit them as they enter the workforce. From there I went to Cosmetology and Health Occupations, they both taught me that you must have confidence in your career field and the value of customer service. I then went to Cyber Support and Networking where I learned the fundamentals of modern computers and how you interact with them. Lastly, I went to Video Game Design and Engineering where I learned how to code and develop games.
I couldn’t do any of this without Sara Dorr and Sydney Wyman who took all of the pictures, made the posters, and created the ‘student spotlights’. They got them ready for the Newsletter, they were always on time, and I loved working with them both. Sara loved working with all of the students and exploring the Hart Career Center programs, she said, “Working with all of the students and capturing moments was my favorite thing about doing the Newsletter. I learned more about Hart Career Center.” Sydney said, “She enjoyed making the posters and working with people to accomplish a common goal.” It was an honor being your Hart Career Center Newsletter writer.

HCC Student Spotlight: Jacob Douglas, Marketing Senior from Mexico High School

Jacob Douglas works in marketing class

Nominated by Mrs. Bridget Bingham, Marketing teacher

I met Jacob last school year in Personal Finance.  He was a quiet, studious student and completed work on time and was always polite.  I saw a good work ethic and a kind person and I specifically asked him to please join me the following year for a marketing class and COE.   Jacob decided to take me up on that offer and I get to see him every morning.  He still has his quiet demeanor and excellent work ethic.  I can always count on Jacob to complete a task or assignment and be polite.

Mrs. Donna Butts Retires

After 36 years as an educator in Hart Career Center

In 1990, Mrs. Donna Butts was hired by Mexico Public Schools to teach Health Science at Hart Career Center. She has served in that capacity for the last 36 years. In addition to her classroom duties, Mrs. Butts has been a bus driver for 35 years and Assistant Lady Bulldog Softball Coach for 7 years. She also works at Kings Daughters home; spending 5 years as a staff nurse and 2 years as an RN consultant.
During her tenure in Mexico, Mrs. Butts has guided numerous young ladies and gentlemen to a successful start in the medical field. Many of them have stayed in touch and sought her advice as they progressed through their continued education and career steps. Beyond the classroom, Donna has assisted and mentored many teachers in various programs and been involved in the district in a variety of capacities. She even mentored a new administrator with grace and patience for the last 13 years. Whether in the classroom, on her daily bus route, on the softball field, hauling FFA students to and around Indianapolis, hosting SkillsUSA events, or in any of the other settings she has found herself in over the past 36 years, Donna Butts has shown her greatness. She is tough, but caring; straightforward and compassionate. She is exactly the kind of adult you would want guiding your children. Donna’s presence will be sorely missed at Hart Career Center and Mexico Public Schools. We wish her well in retirement.
